Pumula's garden was designed by the late Professor Ken Durham. He designed
it as a low maintenance garden using as much indigenous plants as possible.
The advantages of this approach are both cost saving and being 'water wise'
As in every garden, nothing is static and small changes are made all the
time. Plants die, conditions change, etc. It was a daunting task to
identify each and every plant but we were ably assisted by some very
knowledgable friends. However, there are still a few that need to be
We decided to split the plants into three 'loosely' defined categories: trees, shrubs and flowers. Most of the easily accessible trees are tagged showing the Botanical, English, Afrikaans and Xhosa names. Our fynbos is listed separately because we consider this as a dedicated area. Interestingly enough is that quite a few flowers/shrubs listed elsewhere are actually considered part of the fynbos family such as Agapanthus, Arum Lily, Dekriet etc. So we learn!
It is a known fact that gardening is rewarding and we have had firsthand experience of this during the past 17 years. However, gardening with Fynbos has been particularly rewarding for us. To see a King Protea open at the start of the season is something we cherish.
